Artist Biography

The paintings of Craig Nagasawa question our perceptions of permanency and impermanency. He asks us to consider what resides in the space of memory and that of reality.

StudioIn a twist on the traditional Japanese landscape, Nagasawa blends foreground and background, interior and exterior reflecting the dichotomy of mind and body. He uses a vibrant palette to reconstruct and regenerate landscapes of hope and affirmation. In his paintings Nagasawa builds open symbolic structures, unfinished and nonfunctional they serve as vessels to house emotions rather than as homes. "My impulses come from many associations and I try to place these in my work," writes Nagasawa.

Craig Nagasawa is a Senior Lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley.
